The Research Center of Physics of Plasmas (CRPP) is located in the Faculty of Basic Sciences EPFL (Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne). On its staff of 135 researchers, 110 at EPFL and the rest in the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), has 22 different nationalities, which illustrates the international significance within its field of research. CRPP is the main center of Plasma Physics Research in Switzerland. It takes part in the European Fusion Research Program. About 100 specialists contribute to the manifold activities of the CRPP which are mainly focused on fusion as an attractive energy source for the centuries to come.SULTAN (German acronym for SUpraLeiter Test ANlage) is the major facility worldwide for testing and evaluating high current superconductors for the next generation of fusion magnets. Located at the Paul Scherrer Institute ( PSI ) in Villigen, Switzerland, the facility was constructed in the late 1970 as a common venture of three European Laboratories: ENEA (Italy), ECN (the Netherlands) and SIN (Switzerland).Since 1994 it is operated by CRPP-SC and is offered by the European Commission as contribution to the worldwide cooperation for the development of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor ( ITER ). Prototype and R and D conductor samples can be tested over a wide range of operating conditions; typical activities include experiments on critical current, AC losses, stability, and fatigue effects (conductor and joint development and characterization)..
