The system engineering company GTD is integrating in their projects advanced optical communication technologies with application in the defense and security domains. The engineering company GTD is developing unprecedented systems based on a new communication technology that combines high bandwidth, discretion (low detection probability) and security (difficult to intercept and inhibit), which are essential capabilities for applications in the military and security fields. The first implementations are being discussed with the Special Forces of several European and Middle East countries. In particular, the state-of-the-art Optical Communications technology LightSpeed® is being used. This technology provides highly secure wireless voice and data links as well as accurate distance measurement, while remaining difficult to detect and jam. This technology is perfectly suited for sea, air and land applications. In the case of aircrafts, it provides secure air-to-air and air-to-ground links, as well as precise measurement of relative locations, allowing for an increase on safety while flying in closed formations, as well as improving sensors performances by using sparse synthetic aperture techniques. GTD are already applying this technology to the development of a system for in-flight refueling that will enhance these operations with higher precision and better safety conditions. GTD are also working on a system to boost the performance of UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles), ensuring high-bandwidth communication channels for payload, telemetry and telecommand, as well as accurate positioning of the vehicle with respect to the ground station or landing spot. In land applications this technology can be integrated in devices such as helmets or backpacks in order to guarantee undetectable soldier-to-soldier or vehicle-to-soldier links. In the case of vehicles, it enables the establishment of local networks in convoys (static and moving) for seamless communication in radio-silence environments. Finally, for sea applications, the technology offers invulnerable communication channels and positioning assistance for stealthy arrival and departure from harbors. LightSpeed® technology can be combined with other (such as the VENOM system for real-time optical wind speed and direction sensing, or such as the BEAM system that enables detection of optical systems targeting you) in order to obtain integrated solutions perfectly suited for elite shooters.
