GTD and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS) will lead the development of future European chips, a project promoted by the European Commission's reconstruction funds, which will guarantee the continent's technological sovereignty and industrial competitiveness. Technology is power for states. The US veto of Huawei is the example that has caused the most stir. But the recent US president also deprived five Chinese supercomputing companies of his country's technology. When it comes to processors, the brains of computers, Europe is highly dependent on other markets. That’s why actual European Commission is willing to develop its own (and independent) technology for normal and high-performance computing systems. In addition to the usual funds from Europe allocated to this issue (EPI, EuroHPC), Spain is planning to dedicate part of its Post Covid Recovery Fund to support a Barcelona business initiative that intends to develop an accelerator in 4 years and a microprocessor in 6 years, both based on the open source standard 'RISC-V', therefore exempt from embargo or cybersecurity threats. The actors promoting this initiative are the BSC (Barcelona Supercomputing Center) and GTD. Both will soon create a joint company to channel this new project. This company will also be a minority owned by the Spanish State. This project will create no less than 400 jobs in the next 5 years and will involve a total investment of around € 400 million, fully managed from Barcelona.
