GTD delivers On-Board Software for Astrium’s ‘SENTINEL 2’ Spacecraft

Sentinel 2 satellite is the first Sentinel Series optical part of the program GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) initiative of ESA and the European Commission. From 2014, the 1.1 tons satellite will orbit the Earth at an altitude of 785 kilometers and will be able to sweep the surface of the globe in just ten days. The instrument multispectral (MSI) embarked on the satellite generate optical images in 13 spectral channels in the visible and infrared range of short wave, with a resolution of 10 meters and a length of 290 kilometers scanning. In the future, it is planned to extend the global system Sentinel- 2 with a second satellite, operating both simultaneously, it will be possible with full coverage of the planet's surface every five days. Sentinel- 2 will have the ability to provide a sustainable supply of data as a basis for operational services in agriculture (utilization, coverage, etc.), Care of forests (population, damage, forest fires), disaster management (management, early warning) and humanitarian missions. Figure 1: Sentinel -2, image synthesis GTD, as subcontractor of Astrium, has developed the embedded software for Sentinel -2 and is running now the functional validation tasks thereof to ensure compliance with defined functional requirements. Figure 2: High-level diagram Board Software These tasks involve making validation plan, the implementation of Test Routines associated with different subsystems such as Attitude and Orbit Control System, Data Handling System, Payload and Platform. These tasks also includes research and correction of anomalies found during validation.
