MALARSAT Project proposes to provide a malaria risks infection maps at global scale using Earth Observation data at high spatial resolution to support and prevent epidemic episodes . The World Health Organization has designated Malaria as one of the major public health challenges undermining development in the world: · 2 million people killed every year · 500 million infected · 40% of the world population is in risk of malaria at least 1 month per year. · Malaria is the leading cause of death among the under-five children in the world The objective of the MALARSAT Project is to create malaria risks maps at global scale with high spatial resolution. The proposed service for creating malaria risk maps would be critically useful in the following scenarios: · Improvement of efficiency in insecticide programs · Improvement of guerrilla vaccine campaigns efficiency. · Improvement of logistics epidemic treatment provisioning logistics The gap that is missing to obtain these risk maps is the development of suitable models to create them from the available data. The Clinic Hospital of Barcelona, one of the main world authorities on Malaria research, are willing to invest themselves in evaluating the feasibility of creating these models using EnviSat RA-2 data. Therefore we plan to provide them with the following products in the scope of this project: · Malaria Indicators extracted from RA-2 data Subproduct (MIRASP) · Malaria Indicator Viewing Service (MIVS) Additionally, a toolkit for using these data with a model regression tool (i.e. Matlab) as well as a a case study verifying a model hypothesis will be provided. MALARSAT R+D effort is currently partially funded by the Catalonian local Government (Generalitat de Catalunya). Current partners are 3: GTD, IsardSat and Pildo Labs. However, MALARSART Consortium is looking for complementary financial framework and partners, at both European and worldwide levels in order to be able to fully perform the entire panel of the scheduled activities of this ambitious and innovative initiative.
