Barcelona, the new capital of Smart Cities Barcelona, 2 December 2011 - The Smart City Expo World Congress concluded its first edition as the new international benchmark for smart cities. The four-day event in Barcelona brought together 6,160 professionals, 118 companies and 290 speakers to discuss the cities of the future, along with representatives from 51 cities on all five continents. Through keynote conferences, round tables and parallel sessions, the congress inspired debate on the different issues raised in the program: • ICT Basis: ICT offers a significant toolset capable of improving energy efficiency and making transport systems, building, and cities in general smarter. • Living and People: It comprises various aspects of quality of life as culture, health, safety, housing, tourism etc. Or the level of qualification or education, the quality of social interactions, … • Governance & Funding: It includes aspects of political participation, services for citizens, functioning of the administration and factors all around economic competitiveness. • Mobility: It refers to local and international accessibility, availability of information and communication technologies and modern and sustainable transport systems. • Energy: SmartEnergy means always using the most cost effective long term approach to meeting your energy needs, while maintaining the lowest environmental impact. • Environment: It is described by attractive natural conditions (climate, green space etc.), pollution, resource management and also by efforts towards environmental protection. • Urban Planning: About designing and transforming cities to achieve Smart Cities from the urban planning point of view.
