GTD Science, Infrastructures & Robotics has carried out the first part of the Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) of the Machine Protection System (MPS) for the LIPAc accelerator, located in Rokkasho, Japan. This milestone marks the end of an important phase in the work carried out in close collaboration with Fusion for Energy (F4E) and the Japanese organization QST(National Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology).

Over more than three years of collaboration, the team shave worked on the redesign, upgrade, integration, and commissioning of the MPS system, a critical component for the future safe operation of the accelerator. While some outstanding issues remain to be resolved, the SAT represents a keystep in the progressive validation of the system’s functionalities.

LIPAc (Linear IFMIF Prototype Accelerator) is a high-current prototype developed as part of the IFMIF/EVEDA project, a joint initiative between Europe and Japan under The Broader Approach agreement. Its objective is to validate the irradiation technologies required to test future fusion reactor materials. In recent years, LIPAc has achieved several technical milestones, including deuteron beam acceleration, integration of complex subsystems, and operation under increasingly demanding conditions, now moving towards full-power operation inthe next phases of the initiative.

This achievement highlights GTD SI&R’s continued commitment to technical excellence and its active participation ininternational projects that aim to drive the future of fusion energy as a clean, safe, and sustainable power source.
